Bookends for Heavy Books
Heavy books have a way of exposing weak bookends fast. Encyclopedias, art books, oversized hardcovers — they're dense, and anything flimsy just gets pushed aside over time. The usual culprits: bases too narrow to distribute the load, or material so light the bookend migrates with every shuffle.
Steel changes the equation. The mass is built in, the base sits flat and stays there, and a good powder coat or raw patina finish only gets more character with use. Our bookends are cut from 4–6mm steel at our workshop in Cherkasy — each pair is finished by hand, which means the edges are clean and the weight is exactly what it should be.
If your shelf holds anything worth keeping upright, these were made with that in mind.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a bookend strong enough for heavy books?
Two things: material weight and base design. Steel bookends hold by mass — the bookend itself is heavier than what it's restraining, so it doesn't migrate. Plastic and thin resin rely on grip alone, which fails under a dense row of encyclopedias or art books. Our bookends are cut from 4–6mm steel and finished by hand in our Cherkasy workshop, which means the weight is built in and the base sits flat. Browse the full bookends collection for all designs.
Does base width matter when choosing bookends for heavy books?
Yes — it's the most overlooked factor. A narrow base tips under lateral load. For heavy books, look for a footprint of at least 10–12cm on the bottom plate so the pressure distributes evenly. Tall, narrow bookends designed purely for looks will lean before the shelf does.
Do my bookends need non-slip feet for heavy books?
If your shelves are smooth wood or laminate, yes. Even a heavy steel bookend will slide slowly under repeated use without felt or rubber contact on the base. Check that whatever you buy has some kind of friction surface underneath — not just a flat cut edge on a smooth finish.
What height should bookends be for large or oversized books?
A good rule: bookend height should be at least two-thirds the height of your tallest book. Anything shorter won't catch the lean before it starts. For art books and oversized hardcovers (typically 30–35cm tall), look for bookends at least 20cm high. Most of our steel designs fall in the 18–25cm range and are well-suited to standard to large-format shelves.
