Bookends that do more than hold books
Most bookends are invisible — flat metal brackets that disappear behind the spines. They do the job, but there's nothing to look at. We wanted to make bookends you'd notice even on a half-empty shelf.
Our plaster bookend collection takes a different approach. Each piece is a small sculpture — classical busts, architectural columns, expressive shapes — cast from solid plaster in our workshop in Cherkasy, Ukraine. They're heavy enough to hold a full row of hardcovers and interesting enough to stand on their own when the shelf has room.
What's in the collection
The designs pull from classical art and architecture. The Aristotle and Homer busts are modeled after Greek sculpture — clean, recognizable, and weighty. The Neoclassical Pillar set borrows from Roman columns and adds structure to any shelf arrangement. The Buddha Hands pair is quieter — two black plaster hands that bring balance without competing for attention.
Then there are the more unexpected pieces, like the Anatomy Ears — sculptural ear shapes that tend to get a reaction. They're bold, a little strange, and surprisingly good at anchoring a row of art or music books.
Why plaster
We use steel for most of our products, but plaster works differently. It has a matte, chalky surface that feels solid in your hand and looks softer than metal on a shelf. The weight is part of the point — these don't slide or tip when you pull a book out. And the material lets us cast shapes that would be difficult to achieve with steel alone.
Each bookend is made in small batches. The casting process means slight variations between pieces, which is part of working with the material rather than a flaw.
Where they work best
The classical pieces — Aristotle, Homer, the pillars — fit naturally in home offices, libraries, and shelves with hardcovers and reference books. They also pair well with a larger standalone bust on the shelf above — the same form repeated at different scales reads as deliberate. The Buddha Hands and Ears lean more modern and work well in living rooms or creative spaces where the shelf is part of the decor.
They also make strong gifts, especially for people who are hard to shop for. A plaster bust bookend is specific enough to feel personal but useful enough that it won't collect dust.
