Cool Metal Bookmarks: 12 Laser-Cut Designs by Reader, $26 to $37

A bookmark is the smallest object a reader owns and the one they see most often — every time the book opens. That is why a printed card gets lost and a steel silhouette does not: the raven, the skeleton or the fox becomes part of the book. We have laser-cut bookmarks in Cherkasy, Ukraine, since 2011, and the catalogue now runs to about 470 designs. Every one is the same construction: 0.6 mm solid steel, laser-cut, powder-coated matte, edges hand-checked so nothing catches a page, about 17 cm long, on a wooden block engraved "Reading is good for you". Gothic and horror: the raven and the skeleton

The raven is the bookmark we have sold longest and reviewed most — fifty-one reviews without a single one below five stars — and it works because the silhouette is unmistakable at bookmark scale. The skeleton is the joke version: the ribcage sits inside the pages and the skull looks out over the top edge, so the book on the nightstand has someone in it.

Cats, foxes and whales

Animal silhouettes are the largest part of the catalogue, and the three here are the ones that read best at bookmark scale. The Cat That Walked by Himself is Kipling's — tail up, walking away — and the usual gift for someone with a cat and a shelf of classics. Science and mathematics: the golden ratio and evolution

The two that get bought for teachers, engineers and the friend who explains Fibonacci at dinner. The golden ratio spiral is the one design we finish in gold by default, because the silhouette is all curve and the colour does the rest.

How a 0.6 mm bookmark is made, and what it does to a page

Every design starts as an outline reduced to the few lines that make it readable at bookmark scale, with each internal cutout checked so the piece stays one connected shape without a bridge thin enough to snap. It is laser-cut from 0.6 mm sheet steel, powder-coated matte black or gold, and the page-facing edges are checked by hand — a burr on a bookmark is a burr on your page. Then it goes on the engraved block and into the box.

The thickness is the whole point. A 0.6 mm bookmark closes flat inside a paperback without a ridge; it also bends if you fold it in a bag, as Corby and Andreas found, and bends back.
