A small workshop in Cherkasy, Ukraine
Atelier Article started in 2011. Lena and I — Dmitry Olshevskiy — began making things by hand and selling them on Etsy. We did not begin with a business plan. We liked designing objects, and we wanted to find out whether other people would want to live with them.
Today there are eight of us in the workshop. We design, weld, coat, assemble, pack and ship our work here in Cherkasy. There is no distant factory or warehouse of ready-made stock between the person who orders an object and the people who make it.
What we make
We began with furniture for vinyl record collectors — stands and racks for people who wanted their records upright, accessible and part of the room. Vinyl storage is still a large part of the workshop, alongside log holders, bookends, bookmarks, plaster sculpture and hand-poseable plywood puppets.
The materials change with the object. Storage furniture and log holders are welded from steel. Bookends may be steel or cast plaster. The puppets are cut from plywood and assembled with articulated joints. We choose the process around the object instead of trying to make every design in the same way.
The people behind each order
Lena and I lead the design work. Ann T. develops designs with us, while Ann J. keeps the daily work moving from order to delivery. Denis and Sashko weld the steel pieces. Sergey runs the CNC equipment and also drives for the workshop. Roma handles packing and shipping. Most of us have worked together for years, so a new piece is discussed by the same small group that will later make and pack it.
Why we still make things ourselves
We have kept design and production in the Cherkasy workshop because making the objects is the work we want to do. Our days remain close to the material: drawing, welding, finishing, assembly, packing and practical problem-solving at the bench.
Keeping production close also makes a practical difference. We can inspect the welds, finish, edges and fit before an order leaves. If something is wrong, the person who sees it can speak directly to the person who made it. That short distance is more useful to us than a polished claim about craftsmanship.
Custom work is part of the workshop
Atelier Article accepts custom work when it is technically feasible. Dimensions, capacity, finish, construction details and wheel type may be adapted, with feasibility, price and lead time confirmed before ordering. The useful starting point is simple: tell us the available space, the intended use, the finish you prefer and the delivery destination.
Custom requests are not passed to a separate department. They come into the same workshop and are considered by the people who will need to draw, cut, weld, finish and pack the result. Sometimes the answer is straightforward. Sometimes a request needs to change so that the finished object remains stable and practical.
